This blog is an ongoing documentary of the composer and musician, Michael Arthur Grey, whose body of work goes back 40 years. Previous CDs include Grey’s Theme and Hopes and Aspirations; both released from Boundless Records in NYC.

Mike is a third-generation professional musician; his grandfather, Richard Edward Grey, Sr., sang and performed gospel music in Virginia churches beginning at the age of four in the late 1800s.

Mike’s father, Al Grey, played with all the jazz greats (Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, and Count Basie, to name just a few), and developped the plunger method, which is detailed in the book, Plunger Methods for Trombone and Trumpet, written by Al Grey and Mike Grey, published by Second Floor Music.

Mike has led groups of all-star musicians such as, The Marsalis Brothers and the Eubanks Brothers. Mike has also played on The Tonight Show with Kevin Eubanks and is a regular member of The Cotton Club AllStars, who play weekly at the legendary Cotton Club in Harlem. Mike also performed in Aint Misbehavin’ with Nell Carter and others, and has performed in Russia, France, Germany, England, Japan, The Netherlands, Italy, and on many cruise ships.

Mike plans and hosts a memorial concert for his father, Al Grey, annually in New York City, which features many jazz greats. 2010 will mark the 10th year of this memorial tribute to Al Grey’s legacy.

Mike studied trombone at the Berklee School of Music with classmate and long-time friend and collaborator, Kevin Eubanks. He was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA and currently lives in New York City.

He has performed all over the world with various musical ensembles and has collaborated with Teddy Wilson, Joe Cohn, Bobby Durham, Mike Cochrane, Hassan Abdul Ash-Skur, Cindy Blackman, Lisa Nobumoto, Beatrice DeMellow, JJ Wiggins, Al Bartee, Mary Louise Williams Grey, Al Grey, the Marsalis Brothers, the Eubanks brothers, Ed Pazant,  John David Simon, johnny long, Denise A.
